Does Donation Make Us Happy? Applying Longitudinal Path Model to Cross-lagged Panel Model

|
The purpose of this study is to examine whether donating behaviors make individuals happy. If prosocial spending, such as donations, rather than material consumption for an individual, promotes the well-being of the individual, then we can gain a deeper understanding of the link between money and human well-being. This study attempted to observe the relationship between donation behavior and happiness using longitudinal data. This study examined subjective life satisfaction and depression as variables related to happiness. This study attempts to apply a longitudinal path model to a cross-lagged panel model using panel data for estimating causal effects between donation and happiness. The results showed that there were two-way influences between donation behavior and happiness-related variables. It was also found that donation has the effect of increasing satisfaction and reducing depression. The results of this study suggest that prosocial actions, such as donations, should be re-examined in our consumption in order to live happier in the overall rise in income.
